HOMEOWNER PAINTING GUIDE

Deck Stain vs. Deck Sealer in Ohio

Clear sealer mainly limits water absorption while allowing the wood color to show. Stain adds pigment, and that pigment helps protect wood from ultraviolet light. Northwest Ohio decks see humid summers, rain, strong sun, leaf debris, lake-influenced weather, and freeze-thaw cycles, so the existing wood and exposure matter.

Clear sealer

A clear or lightly tinted water repellent preserves the natural look but provides limited UV protection. It may suit newer attractive wood when frequent maintenance is acceptable.

Semi-transparent stain

Semi-transparent stain adds color and UV protection while keeping some grain visible. It needs evenly prepared, absorbent wood; leftover film or patchy weathering can create uneven color.

Solid-color stain

Solid stain hides more variation and is often used on older or previously coated decks. It forms more of a film, so peeling edges and trapped moisture must be addressed.

Dry wood matters

After Ohio rain or washing, shaded boards can remain damp below the surface. Moisture should be checked before application rather than judged by appearance alone.

Maintenance expectations

Horizontal boards weather faster than vertical rails and fences. Sun, standing water, snow, shade, and foot traffic shorten service life, especially where end grain and board gaps stay wet.
